Bio:

Douglas Smith (Ph.D. U.C. Santa Barbara, 1991) is an Associate Professor in the Division of Science and Environmental Policy at CSU Monterey Bay. He mentors CSUMB students in geology, sedimentology, fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, and geospatial analysis in a variety of environmental and scientific investigations. His studies include both watershed and near-shore marine systems, chiefly in central California.

Dr. Smith received a B.S. in Geology from U.C. Davis and earned a Ph.D. from U.C., Santa Barbara using paleomagnetism in conjunction with sedimentation and tectonics to determine the origin of Baja California. During the 1990’s he taught geology courses and fluvial geomorphology at Vanderbilt University. While at Vanderbilt University, he closely collaborated with the Center of Excellence in Field Biology at Austin Peay State University on a wide range of watershed assessment, monitoring, and restoration projects. He also consulted for Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and the Regional EPA on several river assessment and potential restoration projects, especially focusing on the channelized low gradient rivers of western Tennessee.

Since joining CSUMB in 2000, Dr. Smith has involved students in major watershed assessments and other local projects for watershed councils and the Fort Ord Bureau of Land Management. He views student participation in real-world applied science as a critically important extension of the classroom setting

Recent examples of both research and applied science projects can be found at this link.
