Chapter 8 - Cell-Cell Interactions
Pre-health students and those aiming for graduate school in biology should review this chapter in more detail than we covered in class. The material will be covered extensively in upper division Cell & Molecular Biology and in Biochemistry.
Vocabulary:
| tissue organ epithelia tight junction hormone ligand |
collagen fibronectin integrin cadherin antibody |
lignin pectin desmosome G protein second messenger |
extracellular matrix signal transduction pathway primary cell wall secondary cell wall middle lamella signal receptor |
Key Figures: 8.1, 8.3, 8.4, 8.5, 8.7, 8.8, 8.9, 8.10, 8.11, 8.12, 8.13, 8.14, 8.15, Table 8.1, 8.16, 8.17, 8.18, Table 8.2, 8.19
The 2nd Edition of Freeman had an essay at the end of this chapter titled, "How Do Viagra®, Levitra®, and Cialis® Work?" It was an excellent example of how the general story in Figure 8.19 is applied, and was particularly easy for students to remember. For some reason, this essay has been dropped in the 3rd edition of Freeman. Please remind me to hand this out in class to those of you with the new textbook.
