CSUMB Bio 310L - Features of Soluble Proteins - Myoglobin Case Study

Lab #3

Bio 310 Logo The objectives of this third lab are to:
  • Use Cn3D and Clustal W to investigate the evolution of Hemoglobin from Myoglobin.

Here's the assignment:

  • Which residues had to change in hemoglobin in order to form an alpha/beta dimer instead of a monomer as in myoglobin?
  • Using the NCBI website find and retrieve the FASTA format of NP_005359 (Human myoglobin).
  • Useful web links for this assignment:
  • BLAST
  • ClustalW
  • Myoglobin sequence
  • Beta Hemoglobin
  • Alpha Hemoglobin
  • 3HHB in PDB - This is a Cn3D file, so you right-click it and store it on your desktop. Then open it with Cn3D (see first lab).
  • 2MM1 in PDB - This is a Cn3D file, so you right-click it and store it on your desktop. Then open it with Cn3D (see first lab).
  • Hemoglobin - May 2003 Protein of the Month!
  • Prepare a WORD document called myoglobin_hemoglobin.doc
  • Save myoglobin_hemoglobin.doc to the 310 folder in your campus directory.
  • Edit your campus/310/index.html to include a link to myoglobin_hemoglobin.doc
